Cap 232

This little Depron Cap kit has been printed in bright easy to see colours top side and mainly yellow on the underside. The Depron sheet seems to have a very thin outer skin layer of hard smooth plastic which provides an extra degree of strength. All of the pre-cut components are very accurate and the whole model assembles quickly with really well fitting tight joints. A small tube of “Por” type foam adhesive, sharp knife, and some good quality reinforced tape is needed for the build. 5 minute epoxy is recommended on the undercarriage legs.

Giantcod supply tubes of inexpensive thin viscosity foam glue which has been given good reviews. (This product was also described as “trouser glue” following accidental spillage on clothing and soft furnishings by a user). It can be applied directly and allowed to dry, or used as a contact adhesive by allowing the glued surfaces to dry for about 10 minutes before they are finally joined together. Small strips of tape can be used to support joints whilst drying and left in place.

The instructions and images are not the best, text is bordering on vague to reasonable. Some descriptions need reading a few times to work out their meaning. Certain parts are named but unidentifiable by description alone. It may be fair to say the instructions are more challenging than the actual assembly which is fairly logical and straightforward. The width of the reinforced tape supplied is a bit optimistic unless used in 2 strips for jobs like fixing the leading edge and spar. I used the Giantcod 24mm wide reinforced tape which has really good adhesive. Careful positioning of this tape is required, if mistakes are made it’s possible to peel away the outer reinforcing skin on the Depron sheet.

Mounting servos, ESC and receiver is best done with double sided stick tape or pads. When assembling the undercarriage wires, 5 minute epoxy with a small amount of “micro balloons filler” was used. This makes the undercarriage quite strong and rigid. The motor mounting “firewall” can also be fitted in the same manner. Tapering the ailerons at their leading edge was found to provide ample downward movement. Short strips of the Giantcod 24mm tape is used to hinge the elevator, aileron and rudder. This maybe considered as an over-kill, but they won’t fall off.

An Emax CF2822 brushless motor is shown in the instructions but there are no other positive recommendations. Emax ES08 servos are fitted to control all flying surfaces.

The elevator joiner is a length of carbon tube, this is a bit fiddly to install, so a short piece of piano wire with right angles bent on each end was epoxyied into small slots cut with a soldering iron. The first half of the joiner can be glued on the bench then positioned and held to the tail-plane with masking tape before adding the other elevator half.

Some experimenting with receiver and ESC position may be required to achieve the correct centre of gravity balance point. This is easily done by temporally fitting these with very small pieces of double sided tape. The plywood accessories supplied are laser cut and are of good quality hard material. Tiny barbed nylon control horns and small lightweight wheels are supplied.

The only items found in the kit to be troublesome were the black hardened steel pushrod wires. Due to the Z bends on these being too shallow, an attempt at increasing the angle ended with the wire breaking. A new set of piano wire pushrods were made up in a matter of minutes. The originals used as bending patterns. Adjustment is achieved by re-bending the large centre V on these wires.

Dislikes: Pushrod wires.

Instructions: Reasonable.

Quality overall: Very good.

New customer from the Cod but love it! Few notes though, try mounting the engine on balsa wood linking the fuselage and the wing (use epoxy if you can). That will make her much stronger and crash resistant - particularly if you're planning on flying outside!

My first review for GC, but not first time customer. This is a brilliant piece of kit, especially for the money. I ordered midnight, the postie delivred it 36 Hrs later. ( usual quick and prompt service by GC. Thankyou GC, for all previous orders aswell.) My setup was on DX6i; 3x5g servo's for dual ailerons and rudder, 1x8.5g servo for elevator, 900mah 20c 3S battery for the CF2812 on a 7x5 prop, and 20 amp speedo. Used CF2812 as I had it spare, but the CF2822 might be better with a longer prop. Regardless of motor, She will hover about 1/2 stick on power, and flies beautifully. Thankyou GC.

Bought 2 of these... at this price why not ? I built one and have the other for spares or replacement for when I exceed my flying skills. Nice little kit, as many have commented the instructions are a little vague in some areas which is not helped by the poor b&w instructions and those without much previous experience may struggle in some areas of the build. That said it is quite straight forward to build but lacks any setup details so it's a bit of trial and error. For anyone interested a better colour copy of the instructions can be found here:- http://www.yinyanmodel.com/download/Build%20the%20flatfoam%20CAP232%20&%20EDGE540.pdf

Bought this a few months ago. setup as per recommended, i fly it with 1000mah and 1300mah lipos. It is really good value and it goes where you point the stick! no tendencies at all. Fun fly in the wind and plenty of power and rigidity to get away from awkward situations. it is very light so plenty of room to re-enforce it with carbon rods or depron, but i just kept it stock and really enjoy it. At this price there isn't any thing better out there! thank you Giantcod

Purchased this a while back with the idea of it being something I could throw in the back of the car and fly in my lunch times this summer. Finally got round to building it last weekend! Was straightforward to put together, didn't use the instructions much as not much to go wrong with this kit. Would recommend beefing up the front by the motor mount as on the second flight this morning one of the wheels snagged on landing tipping the plane up and the front has creased and cracked. Am using a Towerpro Brushless outrunner 2410-12T 1000kv 12A and 8x6 prop with an old esc out of a Chinese hydrofoil boat, 3s 800mAh Tipple battery, DSM2 rx and 9g servos from here...All I can say is what a blast to fly, will motor round the sky or can pull back on the throttle and elevator and float it around. Will get an Edge when they come back in stock. Got my c of g about 4 cm from LE and seems to fly fine. Go on get one they're great!

Overall I am very impressed! Very cheap plane and fast shipping as I paid standard post and it came the following day. I am enjoying building the model as it goes together easy with step by step instructions which makes life easy. I would also like to thank Ivan for the video link of him flying the CAP 232 as his video really sold the plane to me!

well this is my first plane of this type and was very impressed, im using the recommended setup apart from the servo's, im using the sg90 servo's because the emax ones were out of stock, goes together very easy, the instruction were fairly straight forward too. im really looking forward to trying it out. can somebody put up on here roughly where the center of gravity should be. cheers

Well what can I say ..... Ordered this plane and a whole bunch of other bits and pieces and it turned up in 2 days which wasnt expected as I just used standard post. Plane arrived in good condition with no damage to the box or plane at all. Only problems/niggles I had when putting together was the fiddly elevator assembly and the undercarriage .. apart from that it was totaly ready to go within 3 hours. Have got the Kenda(brilliant motors by the way) 1050kv 43g motor fitted with a 9x6 prop and a 1000mah 3s battery .... so has plenty of power and only has an AUW of 360g I might have to buy another one soon just for the fun factor. well done GC for providing a great plane at a great price.

I purchased this kit cuz I wanted something I could throw out my back door and have a goo with. Just sort of a bash around the sky sort of model. One day after I ordered it arived well packaged and very clear instructions. I threw the main body together with hot glue and in about 1 hour had it all put together. I decided to use one servo for the ailerons so therefore cut a space in the center of the fuse to accommodate the servo. I hooked the control horns very close to the fuse and almost parallel so I could get proportional deflection on both sides. The elevator and stab are a non issue and went together perfectly as described. The one thing I did have to change/ add was to the front where I added a couple blocks of depron to aid mounting the motor and strengthen the front end. This thing will not take hard impacts so the additional suport helps. first flight with a 7x6 APC prop and a 3 s 2200 mah lipo had me flying full chat for bout 8 mins or so. Very surpising. Because I've never flown anything like this before, I wanted to keep it in the air. On the 2-7th flights I was pulling as far back on the throttle as 1/4 and she floats beautifully very agile and then climbs away when you let her out. What surprised me even more was when I threw a 2s 2200 mah lipo on her then sent her up for the 8th flight. Just a quicky to see if she would handle it. 5 mins later I had landed it, checked the lipo only to find it had 70 % cap left. I could see with careful throttle control and light wind days you could get 15 -18 mins flight times. Side note: Make sure your bat is secure as she can turn on a dime and give you change, This may cause your bat to fly off. Lucky enough when it did happen the ESC connection held and I glided safely to earth, reconnected and went flying again. As well I would place some kind of sticker on one of the bottom wings just for recognition when in flight. On very sunny days the sun shines through the yellow and you can't hardly tell top from bottom. Aside from that lovely. Dial in dual rates for slow low flight and let her out at altitude. I can't recommend this model enough! Thanks GC. I wanted the EDGE 540 but came in stock the day after I placed order still though very happy chap.

Bought this kit as I had never built a depron model before and I wanted to try it. Simply put, I found the kit is of very high quality and, at the price, the value is astounding. Will update review when model is complete and flown.

ordred at the start of the week got the model (nicley packeged)in the post on thursday, iv got to say for the money i dont think you could get a better shockie, the build instructions are a bit vauge but should not be a problem if you've built one before, comes with all the carbon you need and comes with all the bits you need ie: push rods, controll horns, and motor mount, i will put in another review of how it flys when iv built it, think its gona be awesome, THANK YOU FOR A NICE PRICED SHOCKIE GIANT COD, TEN STARS IN MY EYES, "GO ON GO FOR IT YOU KNOW YOU WANT ONE"

by Ray Date Added: Wednesday 08 September, 2010
Having only ever built conventional wooden planes (for more than 55 years) from kits, plans and my own designs, I was intrigued to try out one of these "odball" depron kits. I have to say I'm stunned by the performance, which at the moment is too much for me to handle without using 50% D/R settings on aileron (espescially) and elevator! The rudder doesn't seem too effective considering its size, but without 50% D/R it does continuous axial rolls and near vertical climbs on the little CF2822 motor! Great fun - even better when I get to grips with it - very different to my usual motor-gliders, cabin monoplanes and biplanes and semi-scale models. Not sure how long it will last with my present flying, but well worth it. My kit arrived with no accessories at all, just the depron parts, but Rob sorted that out by return - well done Rob and thank you. I have added some reinforcement along the fuselage bottom and discarded the flimsy u/c which is far too springy anyway and beefed up the motor mount and battery fixture for my rough field flying. A great buy and marvellous fun, if a bit frantic at the moment!

This is a fantastic model for people who know how to put a model together. You will have no problems with it because you will adapt it to how you want it. Do not buy it if you are not experienced at building and flying. Because you will not have a clue. The wing is only 3mm thick depron type foam, but it has a nice surface plastic on both sides. Which means you can stick the whole body together with ordinary superglue, without it disolving into a mess. This is a quality design for experienced flyers and would cost £29.99 in a normal model shop. And at that price you would feel a bit cross. But at Giantcod's non rip-off price you feel like you have got your money's worth for once. I was pleased that the wing was in one piece even though it makes the box it was delivered in rather long and thin, Giantcod had wrapped a piece of cardboard round it to protect it. Without the extra wrapper it could have got bent- and therefore ruined- in the post. But it arrived in perfect condition. Thanks guys. -TEN STARS!

Flown the Cap for a while now it's taken everything i have thrown at it.. Been used for contact sports has more glue and cocktail sticks than original foam and wouldn't look out of place in a banana tree still flying tho.. Only let down are instructions and undercarriage 4 stars.. in the end didn't use much of either of them. Fun for your money 5 stars.

right where to start!! i flew it yesturday but only for 20 seconds because it was way off trim and it hit a tree and brok the wing of but 10 mins later i fixed it the next dat (today) i flew it in a biger eara so i could trim it out properly and its is awsome!!!! knife edges are soo good and prophanging is easy and good too!!!!! i am useing the recomended set up exsept the servos im useing cheaper ones. but its just great!! the only down side is the instructions but its not worth taking a star of for that its the flying that matters!!! thank you giant cod and i would also thank you for the help you gave me on how to program the esc

by harvey Date Added: Monday 28 December, 2009
just placed a order!!! but from what i no (from experiance) the motor they recomend use a prop SAVER it holds the prop on bye a tough elactic band tht means if the plane hits in to the the ground the prop will just move back insted of snaping and bending the prop. also the prop they recomend DO NO USE IF YOU WHANT TO DO 3D because it is a thin sports prop if you whant do do 3d use a WIED prop like a qws the prop will act like a paddel and would be perfect for prop hanging and all 3d. when i look for a prop on my bigger planes i aways look out for a 14x5w 3d the w is means its wide just look out for that either the w or it says its 3d always when you whant you do 3d!!

Further to my review 6/10/09 I have flown the plane with a loong max 1600 2s battery in windier conditions than you would expect . It climbs vertically at a slower rate than with an 800 2cell but is still capable of 3D. penetration against the wind is good. Have yet to try 1800 2s. (Haven't got one yet) With reduced throws it would probably be used as a first aerobatic model. you dont feel nervouse asyou would with a dearer plane. Superb value for money, and super fast delivery after ordering.

by david Date Added: Tuesday 06 October, 2009
This is my first profile plane. the instructions are poor but the fun to be had flying the Cap232 far outway the poor instructions. It flies well outdoors in moderate winds with a heavier battery. great fun at twice the price.

by Pushycat Date Added: Thursday 30 April, 2009
As this is almost the same model (wing different) as the Edge 540 it enjoys the same sort of satisfaction rating as an excellent value for money ARTF. Same instructions/assembly guide supplied with both models. (The flat strip leading edge is divided on this version due to wing taper) It gets 5*****. PCf
