Out of curiousity - but also because I have an idea about using them as under cupboard lighting in the kitchen I purchased some waterproof and ordinary LED strips in several colours
The construction is groups of three LEDs with solder pads every 5cm on the high density (60 LED per metre) ones. The low density (30 LED's per metre) are still groups of 3 but solder pads are 10cm apart - they can be cut between the solder pads only - anywhere else the LED's in that group of 3 will not work.
The waterproof ones are exactly the same construction as the ordinary ones but covered with a flexible crystal clear rubbery feeling, domed in cross section, coating. the shape would be like a blunt leading edge to a wing and I guess you could use them as such. You have to cut a piece of the waterproof cover away at the solder pads to solder on some wires; it is soft enough to cut away with your fingernail which I would recommend using as it prevents any risk of cutting through the electrics.
Using a 3S Lipo they are bright enough to see in all but full sun, a 2S LiPo would be enough for a fully dark night and would also draw less current. On 3S a full strip draws 300mA for 60 LED's and 150mA for the 30 per meter strips.
Recommendations
The waterproof ones are 3 times as heavy as the ordinary at 30 grams for a metre strip so I would not recommend them for small planes. If you are going to run a strip the full length of the wing or Fus I'd recommend the low density ones as the 60/metre ones on 3S are bright enough to read by 10ft away at night and twice the price! If you are going to put short strips on the wing tips, fin, tailplane etc then use the high density ones as you will also be able to cut them to the nearest 5cm. Waterproof are perfect for boats (and Kitchens) or if you want a streamlined surface and weight isn't a problem.
I've just fitted Red, Green, Blue and Yellow high density ones to a 90 sized Harrier 3D, a total of about 200 LED's and it lights up the whole garden. with the red and green ones the full length of the wing inside the transparent covering facing forward I'm just hoping they don't blind me coming in to land :-)
